Bone cancer can start in any bone of the body, but it most commonly damages the pelvis or the long bones in the arms and legs. Bone cancer is rare, making up less than 1% of all cancers. In fact, non-cancerous bone tumors are much more common than the cancerous ones.
The term "bone cancer" does not include cancers that start elsewhere in the body and spread or metastasize to the bone. Instead, those cancers are named for where they started, such as breast cancer that has spread to the bone.
Some types of bone cancer happen primarily in children, while others affect mostly adults. Surgical removal is the most common treatment, but chemotherapy and radiation therapy also might be utilized. Osteosarcoma – Osteosarcoma is the first and most common type of bone cancer. In this tumor, the cancerous cells create bone. Surgery to remove a tissue sample for testing - During a surgical biopsy, your primary care physician makes an incision through your skin and removes either the entire tumor or a part of it.
Deciding the type of biopsy you require and the terms of how it should be performed requires careful planning by your healthcare provider team. Primary care physician need to perform the biopsy in a way that would not interfere with future surgery to remove bone cancer. Bone cancer Stages

The extent or stages of bone cancer are suggested by Roman numerals, starting from 0 to IV. The lowest stages suggest that the tumor is smaller and less aggressive. By stage IV, the cancer has spread or metastasized to other parts of the body.

As other treatments have been advanced, amputation is becoming less common. If amputation is required, you will likely be fitted with an artificial limb and go through training to learn to do everyday tasks using your new limb.
Chemotherapy uses strong anti-cancer drugs, often delivered through a vein or intravenously, to kill cancer cells. Although, this type of treatment works better for some forms of bone cancer than for others. For instance, chemotherapy is usually not very effective for chondrosarcoma, but it is an important part of treatment for osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma.
Radiation therapy exercises high powered beams of energy, like X-rays, to kill the cancer cells. During radiation therapy, you lie down on a table when a special machine moves around you and aims the energy beams at right points on your body.
Radiation therapy is usually used before an operation because it might decrease the tumor and make it easier to remove. This, in turn, might help reduce the likelihood that amputation will be required.
Radiation therapy might also be used in people with bone cancer that cannot be removed with surgery. After surgery, radiation therapy might be used to kill any cancer cells that might be left behind. For people with advanced bone cancer, radiation therapy might help control signs and symptoms, like pain.
